The Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, has emphasized that sustainable economic growth and the successful transformation of Nigeria’s potential depend heavily on the quality of institutional leadership and responsible stewardship.
Speaking as the Chairman of the leadership event organized by SixthSense Leadership at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, Kwairanga addressed an audience of business leaders, policymakers, and professionals. The gathering, convened by Mr. Bright “UK” Ukwenga, focused on charting a course for national development through enhanced leadership practices.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s enterprising population and abundant natural resources, Kwairanga noted that translating these advantages into progress requires disciplined decision-making and robust systems.
“Leadership is fundamentally about stewardship,” Kwairanga stated. “It is about recognising that every position of responsibility comes with an obligation to build something that will endure beyond one’s tenure.” He added that true leadership achievement must be measured not only by individual accomplishments in office, but also by the strength of institutions and the opportunities created for future generations.
Drawing from his experience in the capital market, the NGX Group Chairman highlighted that financial markets and broader economies thrive on confidence, transparency, and consistency. Investors commit capital when they trust governance structures, while public institutions earn trust through transparent decision-making. Kwairanga reaffirmed that the Nigerian Exchange Group remains committed to supporting enterprise, facilitating capital formation, and maintaining market confidence through continuous institutional development.
Addressing the country’s economic and structural shifts, Kwairanga called for leaders who are adaptable, disciplined, and steadfast in upholding integrity and good governance. He also placed strong emphasis on the intentional development of the next generation of professionals.
According to him, talent alone is insufficient without mentorship, responsibility, and experiential learning. He urged current leaders to view succession planning as an essential duty rather than treating leadership as an obstacle to emerging voices.
Furthermore, Kwairanga advocated for cross-sector collaboration, noting that Nigeria’s economic challenges cannot be resolved by the government or private sector acting in isolation. He encouraged participants to translate conference insights into practical, organizational changes.
“The future of Nigeria will not be determined by the scale of our potential alone,” Kwairanga concluded. “It will be determined by our collective ability to build credible institutions, make responsible decisions, invest in people and sustain progress across generations.”
